• Standard Holly Trees, also known by the Latin Ilex aquifolium, are hardy evergreen ornamental trees with glossy dark green leaves. They bloom delicate white flowers in late spring through summer, with the vivid red berries associated with holly appearing in autumn/winter. Trained into a classic lollipop stem, these trees are ideal for small gardens and patios.
• When planted out in the garden and not pruned into shape, Holly trees can reach an ultimate height of around 12 metres and a spread of up to 8 metres. Be sure to plant in fertile soil with good drainage. Holly trees are tolerant of most soil types and prefer a spot in full sun or partial shade.
• Standard Holly Trees are fairly low maintenance and demand only a little attention to thrive. Regular watering is required to keep the soil moist but well drained. This is particularly important if you keep the tree in a pot, where it can’t absorb moisture from the ground. Annual pruning is all that is needed to maintain the attractive lollipop shape. The best time of year for pruning is late winter or early spring, before the tree enters its growing phase.
