• CLASSIC CULINARY HERB: Greek Oregano is a hardy perennial with aromatic green leaves and is considered by many to be the best of all the oregano types for flavour. Oregano is an essential ingredient in many Mediterranean dishes, from pizza to pasta sauces, Greek salads and Spanish stews.
• HARDY PERENNIAL HERB: With its compact leaves and often very ornamental flowers, oregano also makes a good creeping ground cover plant or an attractive filler for window boxes and containers. The flowers stalks are spiky and may be white, pink or purple. It’s a perennial so should live for many years and is usually hardy enough to survive the British winter.
• HOW TO PLANT: Sow seeds 0.5cm deep, in small trays of compost and lightly cover the seeds with a sprinkling of compost, and place at a temperature of 15-20°C. Alternatively sow direct outside in April and May. Prick out seedlings individually to 7cm pots, once large enough to handle. Grow on in cooler conditions, then gradually harden off plants in a cold frame before planting out after risk of frost has passed. Transplant to final positions 30cm apart or into larger containers.
• GROWING ADVICE: Oregano can be slow to germination and takes at least 10-20 days. Harvest leaves at any time although the flavour is best before the plant flowers. Pinch out the tops and flowers to promote branching and leaf growth. When the plant becomes mature and woody, simply cut it back close to the ground and you should have new foliage within a fortnight.

Planting veg, herbs and flowers is a wonderful way to spend time in your garden, cultivate mindfulness and appreciate the little things just like in years gone by.
