• AN ESSENTIAL FOR THAI CUISINE: Lemon Grass is a half-hardy, perennial, lemon scented tea herb. It is very popular for flavouring in Asian cooking, especially Thai cuisine. It’s a tropical grass, originally from Indias. Its oil is also used in perfumes.
• THRIVES IN A WARM SUNNY SPOT: Lemon grass isn't hardy in the UK and needs protection from frost. It is ideal for growing in a container that can be placed in a warm, sunny spot in summer, then moved indoors over winter. If you don’t have space indoors over winter, simply treat it as an annual and grow fresh plants every spring.
• HOW TO PLANT: Use a mixture of 50% sand and 50% compost as a growing medium. Place in a seed tray. Sow seed at a depth of approximately 0.5cm deep. Cover with a thin layer of compost or vermiculite. Put the seed tray in a sealed plastic bag or wrap it in clear plastic cling film. Store the tray in 21-24°C but don't exclude from light as this aids germination. It is important that this temperature is kept constant.
• GROWING ADVICE: Gently water or mist daily to keep the seeds moist. Remove the bag or cling film when the seeds sprout. Germination usually takes 21-40 days. Put the tray in full sunlight.Prick off into trays or pots and grow on in containers so they can be brought inside in cold weather, will not survive below temperatures of 6°C. To harvest Lemongrass just carefully pull & lightly twist the stem to harvest the fleshy stem that is bound in a easily peeled harder papery bark.
