• EASY TO GROW, PRODUCES AN EARLY HARVEST: Broad beans or Vicia faba are simple to grow and can produce an earlier harvest than many other vegetables. The Sutton Dwarf as the name suggests is a dwarf variety that produces abundant crops on small plants, ideal for successional sowings it is a hardy, stocky plant, suitable for more exposed locations and small gardens.
• LONG SEASON VARIETY CAN ALSO BE OVERWINTERED: Sow from late winter to early summer for a harvest lasting until November. Grow outdoors in raised beds of vegetabls plots to cultivate your tasty broad beans, an easy a relativetly trouble free vegetable to grow and ideal for a beginner. Bean plants are nitrogen fixers so when harvesting is over, cut plants down and dig in as a green manure.
• HOW TO PLANT: Sow direct into well-prepared soil in October and November or from February to June. Sow direct 5cm deep and 10-15cm apart into well-drained soil in a sunny spot. Rows should be spaced 45cm apart and seedlings should be thinned if necessary. Pinch out the tops to prevent blackfly. Harvest once pods become filled with succulent tasty young beans. Can also be sown indoors and transplanted outside once sprouted.
• TOP GROWING TIPS: Broad beans 'fix' nitrogen from the air, so cut spent plants off at ground level and leave roots to rot back into the ground to release nitrogen for next year's crops. Sutton Dwarf pods should be picked when they are young for the best flavour. Protect from mice and slugs. If growing over winter, cover plants with a cloche during the very worst weather to prevent damage.
