- THE BRAND In 1740 Admiral Edward Vernon enforced a reduction in the strength of the British Navy s rum ration, passing an order that his sailors rum be diluted with water. When his men complained about their new watered-down supply, Vernon fondly known as Old Grog suggested the addition of limes and sugar to make the liquid more palatable. It is in honour of this unlikely mixologist that Old J Spiced Rum was born
